Although noted mostly
for its waterfowl, it also provides habitat for bald eagles and
peregrine falcons. There are also deer, bobcats, otters, black bear,
240 species of birds and other wildlife species. This has also been
referred to as "the land of the huntsman's delight" and the "Canada
Goose Hunting Capital of the World." In its heyday, The Lodge at Lake
Mattamuskeet hosted hunters from throughout the world. In the Atlantic
flyway, the county is still the annual migration home for thousands of
tundra swan from Alaska, Canada geese, and over 200 species of other
waterfowl. The Lake Mattamuskeet and Alligator River Canoe and Small
Boat Trails are also popular.
